RT (formerly Russia Today) is a state-controlled international television network funded by the Russian federal tax budget. It operates pay television channels for viewers outside Russia and provides internet content in English, Spanish, French, German, and Arabic. and Russian.
RT operates as a multilingual service with traditional channels in five languages: the original English channel opened in 2005, the Arabic channel in 2007, Spanish in 2009, German in 2014 and French in 2017. RT America (since 2010) RT UK (since 2014) and other regional channels also offer some locally based content.
RT is a brand of "TV-Novosti", "an autonomous non-profit organization" founded by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti on April 6, 2005. During the economic crisis in December 2008, the Russian government headed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin included ANO "TV-Novosti" in the list of key organizations of strategic importance for Russia.
RT has been described as a propaganda outlet for the Russian government and foreign policy. RT has also been accused of spreading disinformation by news reporters, including some former RT reporters. UK media editor Ofcom has repeatedly found that RT has violated its neutrality rules and once posted "materially misleading" content.
RT's editor-in-chief compared this with the Russian Army and the Defense Ministry and spoke of "waging an information war against the entire Western world." In September 2017, RT America was instructed to register as a "foreign agent" with the United States Department of Justice under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. By law, RT is required to disclose financial information to the United States.
