Press TV (stylized as PRESSTV) is an Iranian state-owned news and documentary network broadcasting in English and French. It is affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), which is the only organization that can legally transmit radio and TV broadcasts in Iran. The 24-hour channel, headquartered in Tehran, opened on July 2, 2007 and was intended to compete with Western English services.
Press TV has been described as the propaganda of the Iranian government. In The Jewish Chronicle, he was criticized and accused of publishing "the most discredited motives", including anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial, promoting Iranian foreign policy, and published the forced confessions of many prisoners. The channel has since been subject to sanctions and restrictions by multiple countries.
Press TV was created to present news, images and discussions, especially on Middle Eastern issues, against the news in BBC World News, CNN International and Al Jazeera English. Press TV is state-funded and is part of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the only organization within Iran that can legally transmit radio and television broadcasts. Based in Tehran, it broadcasts to North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, and Latin America regions.
The head of the IRIB is directly appointed by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; According to The Guardian, he is close to the country's conservative political faction, especially the elite Revolutionary Guards.
