NDTV is a 24x7, 24 hour English news and current affairs television channel based in New Delhi, India.
Until the late 1980s, television broadcasting in India, like most of the world, was not in private hands. There were some special rangers for Doordarshan in the news production area. Freelance journalists were given assignments to present the news and later participated in current affairs programs and documentaries.
1988: New Delhi Television was founded by Prannoy Roy, a former professor of economics at the University of Delhi, and his wife and business partner Radhika Roy. Roys is known today for helping the Indian government break control of television news.
New Delhi Television has started broadcasting Doordarshan's hugely successful weekly news magazine The World This Week, covering world news and entertainment. NDTV's Tiananmen Square broadcast and the fall of the Berlin Wall were groundbreaking in Indian television news and created brand awareness.
NDTV has quickly become a trusted private news provider. NDTV hosted its programs on Doordarshan and later on CNN and BBC. Unlike the television wing of PTI and United News of India, this private news production company was quite successful.
1989: NDTV analyzes the first television broadcast of the Indian general election results. 1995: NDTV becomes India's first private national news producer with the TV series "Tonight" aired on Doordarshan.
