Euronews is a Europe-wide Pay TV news network based in Lyon, France. The network went live on January 1, 1993 and aimed to broadcast world news from a pan-European perspective.
It is jointly owned by various public and state-owned broadcasters in Europe and North Africa, and is now majority owned by Media Globe Networks led by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, chairman of the supervisory board. It is also a live global news provider, viewable on its website, YouTube and various mobile devices and digital media players.
In 1992, after the Gulf War, when CNN identified itself as the leading source of 24-hour news programming, the European Broadcasting Union decided to create Euronews to present information from a European perspective. The channel's first broadcast took place on January 1, 1993, in Ecully, Lyon. In 1996 an additional broadcasting studio was opened in London. It was founded by a ten-person public service broadcaster group.
