The United States Capitol, often referred to as the Capitol Building, is the seat of the United States Congress and the seat of the U.S. federal government legislature. Located on Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., although no longer located in the FIFA geographical center, the Capitol is the site of origin for the district's numbering system and the district's four quarters.
The original building was completed in 1800. Although the Capitol was temporarily rendered useless as a result of the burning of Washington in 1814, the building was completely renovated within five years. The building was later expanded, in particular with the addition of a huge dome, and enlarged chambers for the controversial legislature, the House of Representatives on the south wing and the Senate on the north wing. Like the main buildings of the executive and judicial branches, the Capitol is built in a distinctive neoclassical style and has a white exterior. Both the eastern and western elevations are officially referred to as fronts, although only the eastern front was intended for the reception of visitors and officials.
