Channel 44 The News Channel, or simply, Channel 44, is an independent regional television network originally from Mexico and owned by Grupo Intermedia, a company owned by Arnoldo Cabada de la O.
It mainly serves the communities of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua; El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico through its main station, XHIJ-TDT, and Chihuahua, Delicias and Cuauhtémoc through the XHICCH-TDT station. It also has a "sister" station, XHILA-TDT, in the city of Mexicali, Baja California. Its programming consists mainly of newscasts with a local focus and entertainment programs.
On September 26, 1979, the Ministry of Communications and Transportation granted a concession to operate a television station in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, to Arnoldo Cabada de la O, 1 who was previously the host of the radio station XESB-AM of Santa Bárbara, Chihuahua, and former news host of XEJ-TV channel 5.2
In its beginnings, the channel offered a completely local and independent programming, mainly dedicated to the diffusion of social service programs led by Arnoldo Cabada de la O himself.3 In 1984, for economic reasons, the channel obtained its first affiliation with a television network. It was possible to agree with Televisa the transmission of a minimum of 7 hours of the programming of XEW-TV Channel 2 in Mexico City, as well as some XHGC-TV programs, also in Mexico City.4
