A mysterious virus has caused an international outbreak of respiratory disease. Now the infection has reached the USA. UU.
An outbreak of a new coronavirus in China has killed nine people and made more than 400 sick, and has spread to several other countries. The first case outside of Asia was announced Tuesday, when federal health officials confirmed that a man from the state of Washington who had recently traveled to China had been hospitalized.
Here is a quick summary of what we know so far.
What is a coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are called the peaks that protrude from their membranes, which resemble the crown of the sun. They can infect both animals and people, and cause respiratory tract diseases, ranging from the common cold to serious conditions such as SARS, which made thousands of people around the world sick, and killed nearly 800, during an outbreak in 2003
How do I know if I am infected with the new coronavirus?
Symptoms of infection include high fever, shortness of breath and lung injuries. Mild cases may resemble the flu or a cold, making detection difficult. It is believed that the incubation period, the time from exposure to the onset of symptoms, is approximately two weeks.
Little is known about who is at greatest risk. Some of the nine patients who died also suffered other diseases.
How was this virus identified?
On January 8, The New York Times reported that Chinese researchers had identified a new coronavirus as the pathogen behind a mysterious disease that had made 59 people sick in Wuhan, an 11 million city in central China.
The cases were linked to workers in a market that sold live fish, animals and birds. The market was then closed and disinfected.
The number of human infections has grown dramatically, to over 400 in China, and cases have now been confirmed in Taiwan, Japan, Thailand and South Korea. The nine people who died from the disease were in Hubei, the Chinese province of which Wuhan is the capital, and many of the other infected people had lived in Wuhan or traveled there.
On Tuesday, health officials announced the first case outside of Asia. They said the infected man, a resident of Snohomish County, Washington, had recently traveled to the Wuhan region.
What is the source of the outbreak?
Animals are the most likely primary source of the outbreak, but it is not clear which animals. It is also believed that previous outbreaks of similar diseases, including SARS, arose from live animal markets. Another coronavirus, MERS, is transmitted to humans by camels.
What can people do to protect themselves?
Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said travelers to China should "absolutely" avoid live animal markets and stay away from animals in rural areas. He reiterated that travelers should practice "good hand hygiene" and try to prevent someone from coughing and sneezing. This text
